Denim, Checks, & Oxfords

Posted by Devin

As you know, I recently acquired a new pair of Oxfords from Rack Room Shoes and I am wearing them All. The. Time. Especially now that the weather has finally cooled down a bit and I am looking for something other than sandals in my closet. I had seen women on Pinterest wearing oxfords and other menswear-inspired shoes with dresses and I thought it looked so darn cute! Sometimes I feel a little hesitant to try out new fashion ideas that are a bit out of my usual comfort zone, but I really liked this trend so I decided to give it a shot!

I have to say, I really loved wearing these shoes with my dress. I thought it looked cute and I was able to wear comfy, flat, lace-up shoes instead of my usual heels with my dress. This is a trend I can get on board with! Especially if I'm chasing Cash and juggling ten things in my arms. What do you think of this current trend? Yay or nay?

I have to mention this denim dress as well. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Ever since I was a teenager, I have always had a denim dress in my closet. I love them. They are casual and comfortable and super versatile. A number of years ago I found myself without this closet staple and decided I needed to go on the hunt for one. Unfortunately, most of the dresses I found were too short! I wanted a dress that hit me at the knees and apparently that is hard to come by in a denim dress. Then I found this dress on clearance at Kohl's.

Normally at Kohl's I wear about a size 4-6 and they did not have these dresses left in anything smaller than a 10. At first I thought, well a 10 isn't going to work and I started to walk away. But then I took a peek at the price tag and it was marked down to only $5! Can you believe that?!! For that price I decided to try on the 10 and I'm so glad I did! The dress was the perfect length in a 10. This dress is meant to fit tighter and shorter but I loved it looser and longer, just what I was looking for! It has been a favorite of mine ever since then. The moral of this story: if you are looking for something more modest, think outside the box! Sometimes you can find what you're looking for when you least expect it.

What I Wore:
Dress - Kohl's
Check Shirt - Forever 21
Oxfords - Rack Room Shoes
Belt - Ross
Necklace - Gift

Natural Tree Branch Candle Holders

Posted by Devin

For the past few years, I have really found myself gravitating more towards natural elements and neutral color schemes when it comes to decorating for the holidays. I especially love finding ways to use old, rough wood in my home. So the other day I was poking around our pile of scrap wood (trimmings from the trees on our property) and I found this piece of a tree branch that I thought would make such pretty candle holders! I felt a super easy project coming on!

But as it turned out, my super easy project is only super easy if you have one of two things: 1. the ability to use power tools, OR 2. a husband who has the ability to use power tools. Thankfully I have the latter. (I know, I know. I need to learn how to use them. But I am so afraid I am going to saw off some vital body part! And there's no re-do's on sawing off body parts.) Here's Cash helping me measure my branch. I tried to saw it by hand at first and quickly realized I was going to be sawing for the rest of my life, ergo I begged my hubby for help.

So here's what I... I mean, Jake... did. All you have to do is measure your branch to the length you want it (I made mine around 7" tall) and then saw the bottom and top of your branch with two parallel cuts so it creates a level surface for your candle. My branch was long enough to make two candle holders. Once they were cut and level, I used a rag to wipe it down really well and knock off any loose pieces of bark.

Then to keep the candle in place, I simply inserted a nail (one without a head on it) into the center of the branch. Punch the nail into the middle of the candle when you place it on the branch and it will keep it from going anywhere. And yes, I did do this step myself. ;) I've seen a lot of branch candle holders out there that use votive candles set down inside the branch, but I really liked the idea of a candle holder with the candle up on top. I won't be burning candles on these for a super long period of time (just for dinner), so I wasn't too worried about wax dripping down, but if you do decide to burn them for awhile, you may want to place a tray or dish under the branches to catch melted wax.

I love the rustic touch these candle holders bring to my Thanksgiving table-scape. I'm planning on using them for Christmas as well and who knows? They may stick around throughout the year!

Fashionable in Flannel

Posted by Tara

"Life is too short to wear boring clothes"-Author Unknown

I came across this quote recently and fell in love with it. Life is really too short to wear boring clothes. I feel like I can wear comfortable, exciting, fashionable clothes and still run around and be a mom. Do I dress like this every single day. Nope. I'm just like all of you wearing workout clothes as I clean my house and drop kids off at school, but when I get the opportunity to dress nice, I do! I enjoy putting together outfits that highlight my style.

Flannel is certainly part of my style. My love for flannel has grown over the past year, I would wear it everyday if I could! I was reading an article today about "What makes you a Hipster?" and I noticed a few of the things on the list were things that I wear constantly: flannel, skinny jeans, ironic tops, messy bed head.. the list goes on. I'm definitely not a true hipster, but it was interesting how many of the items on the list I wear!

When it comes to building a trendy wardrobe, a trusty woven or flannel button-down is an excellent place to start. This season there are all sorts of colors of flannel. I have a few more I want to add to my closet for Christmas. Flannel is great on scarves as well. I am seeing them everywhere. It adds a touch of texture to an outfit.

You can style flannel all different kinds of ways like western, grungy, hipster, or laid-back California cool. Put it under a sweater like I did or on top of a printed tee or wear it alone, there is almost no wrong way to wear it. I like to pair mine with a cream tulle skirt for church on Sundays.

Flannel is a must-have for me this season. I hope you were able to find some inspiration on how to wear it this winter! Be sure to check out my other outfits with flannel.

What I Wore:
Sweater: Target
Flannel: H&M
Boyfriend Jeans: Forever 21
Boots: Rack Room Shoes
Clutch: Fresh Picks
Lipstick: Maybeline Very Cherry

Why I Fashion Blog

Posted by Devin

Out of everything Tara and I do on our blog, sometimes I think it's the Fashion portion that people notice the most. It's not necessarily what gets the most hits on our blog, but it's what people seem to remember us for and what they want us to share when seeking our "blogging expertise", so to speak. This is funny to me as fashion was not originally included on our blog at all and was added in a non-nonchalant sort of way. But because the fashion part of our blog has received so much attention (some good and some bad), I thought I would touch on how it started and why we continue to make it a weekly addition to our blog!

Tara and I started this blog for the same reason we continue it today: to share the things we love with other women. It's our motto, it's why we do it. At the time we started we were working on a lot of fun projects, sharing yummy recipes with each other, trying to get fit one day at a time, telling each other our "mommy tales" of both success and failure, and we wanted to share all of this with everyone else too! We felt like we might be able to provide some inspiration out there to other moms and have fun creating a blog together along the way. So we decided to give it a shot! We told each other, if it got too over-whelming or if we just ended up downright hating it, we'd quit! No problemo.

So fast forward a few months and it turned out we both really enjoyed blogging! We were working with our good friend Caitlin of Caitlin Nalder Photography trying to get our blog to look the way we wanted it to when Caitlin suggested to us that we should start participating in What I Wore Wednesday that The Pleated Poppy hosted on her blog every week. We didn't even know what this was. Caitlin told us "You both dress cute already, just take a few pictures of your outfits you're wearing and put together a quick post showing what you wore. Then just link it up to The Pleated Poppy and you will get SO many hits." OK, sounded fine to us, so we gave it a try! And Caitlin was right! It brought us a lot of hits.

Although the fashion posts were boosting our stats, I had a hard time at first feeling very inspired to do them. I thought "Who cares what we are wearing? Why am I sharing this with my readers?" But then something occurred to me. I had just finished a long period of time where I was working in my church's youth organization and the other women I worked with would often tell me, "You dress cute and current and it really sets a good example to the girls to show them that you can dress trendy but modestly at the same time." Hmmm... Did these girls care what I was wearing? Well, they did occasionally ask me where I had bought this or that... I had even helped a few of them go clothing shopping before... Maybe they did care! And maybe I could make a difference by showing modest outfit inspirations on my blog! OK, now I had the motivation to fashion blog.

In a sea of fashion blogs where a large portion of what is shown is not modest, I am proud of the content Tara and I have put out in our Fashion section. I know it's just a drop in the bucket and I know it's not a super-noble, world changing thing, but it's something I can do to share my values with younger girls and women alike. Modesty and beauty go hand-in-hand in my book and I love having a platform to share this ideology with others. I enjoy striving to find affordable options for cute and modest outfits to share with those who visit our blog. I have always liked fashion and now I have a reason to focus a little more on it, yay! But there is no greater reward for me than when one of my nieces or one of the young women I have worked with comments on my fashion posts to let me know how much she likes it. Mission. Accomplished.

One more word on fashion posts. Tara and I take turns every week showing one outfit we have worn recently. I post one week, she posts the next. All in all, we each share about 2 outfits out of the approximately 30 outfits we will wear in a month. I think it's important for people to remember that we are obviously going to be showing the cream of the crop in our monthly ensembles. (Now you're going to look at our clothes and say "That's the cream of the crop?!" Lol!) We do actually wear these clothes, but not necessarily every day. We are busy moms and we try our best to look nice and presentable most of the time, but some days we never get out of our workout clothes or even, sometimes, our jammies. Ack! We are just like every other mom out there. We don't want to come across as fake or unreal, but if we are going to share clothing that will provide fashion inspiration, it's gonna have to be the nicer outfits we are wearing rather than our robes and slippers. Who's going to want to see that?! I guess I assume that people realize this, that we are putting our best foot forward on fashion inspiration posts, but I think it's good to mention again. The last thing we want to do is make anyone feel bad or like they are not adding up. We are not perfect or in a constant state of "glam." Who is?! Well, you know, besides Posh Spice.

Thanks for listening to the ramblings of a fish-out-of-water fashion blogger. I hope you enjoy our fashion posts and possibly find some inspiration here!
